What a day and night at Prix Jeunesse International 2026! Day 3 was filled with screening and discussing the non-fiction shows and shorts for 7-10-year-olds.
There were four shows that featured connections with nature in this category: 1) My Class in Greenland from Denmark, 2) Call Me Wild Child from Taiwan, 3) Animal City from Colombia, and 4) Mho Khao Mho Gang from Thailand.
Animal City focused on Kilian, a 9-year-old guardian of birds, who advocates for the horned lark, a critically endangered subspecies in Columbia. He keeps a detailed notebook of birds in Columbia and beautifully draws and paints the birds for his notebook.
Similar to the ‘Akikiki, there are very few horned larks left in the region, and only 2% of the habitat remains for the horned larks. Raising the stories of these birds and other endangered species is a valuable step in reflection on biodiversity loss around the world.
Tonight, I presented on “What is Media Literacy?” during the evening info session Fostering Media Literacy through Media. Media literacy is perceived as a set of competencies or skills necessary for participation in civic and cultural life, requiring an informed, critical, and creative citizenry.
This set of competencies includes: 1) Access, 2) Analyze, 3) Evaluate, 4) Create, and 5) Act.
We create Forest Calls 2.0 as a call to action, and encourage the development of informed, critical, and creative stewards of nature and our shared world.
