‘2026 Artist In Residence’

We are happy to announce that Louis-Gabriel Pothier has been named ‘Artist In Residence’ for the 2026 edition of “Forest Calls”.

Louis-Gabriel is an independent self-taught musician, born in Montreal in 1981. He is an exceptional melodist, known both in Canadian and European media production circles for composing film and television music that creates “worlds where emotions and nuances are hidden in between the notes”.

About four years ago, we contacted Louis-Gabriel to compose a “maquette” (i.e. rough draft) for an animated short film called “Last Call: The Last Oʻo Bird”. Both the project and his music will be used later this year as part of “Forest Calls”. In the meantime, you can listen to his rough draft here:

Louis-Gabriel is currently working with Hee Ra Yoo (UC CCM Dance) and Sharon Balidoy (Kumu Hula at Ka ʻImi Naʻauao O Hawaiʻi Nei) to create a creative dance collaboration that will be performed on the evening of October 11th 2026 – during the live performance of “The Story of the ʻAkikiki”.

We are hopeful that we’ll also be successful at organizing a music Master Class with Louis-Gabriel (October 7th – 12th) at UC, in which he will share his experience and knowledge, both as a veteran musical composer as well as a student of ethnomusicology (i.e. traditional Hawaiian music and rhythm).

Louis-Gabriel, we look forward to welcoming you in person to the Queen City this October. Thank you for collaborating with us on this amazing project!
