Last Chance To See The ‘Akikiki
Book – coming soon
The year 2023 marked the end of a multi-thousand year existence for the ʻakikiki, a small honeycreeper species that inhabited one of the most remote land masses in the world – Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi.
Last Chance to See the ʻAkikiki captures the haunting beauty of the ‘Akikiki (Oreomystis bairdi) in the final months of its existence. Full-color plates showcase not only the birds in their jaw-droppingly beautiful habitat, but also the ongoing efforts to try and do the seemingly impossible— bring the ʻAkikiki back from extinction.
Graham Talaber, working in association with Kauaʻi Forest Bird Recovery Project, has documented a rarely seen and tragically beautiful battle between existence and extinction. Part gallery, part call for action, Last Chance to See the ʻAkikiki aims to raise awareness for the plight Hawaiʻi species face in the Anthropocene era.
